Levadas (old irrigation channels)  and walking paths crisscross the volcanic and rocky terrain. One trail leads up to the peak of Pico Ruivo.  The island is also known for its Madeira wineries which are found on the southern coast, Funchal, the capital, is home to a cathedral, built in the sixteenth century. Madeira is a nice escape for a couple of days away from the mainland.
