Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest and easternmost country in South America and in Latin America. Brazil is the world's fifth-largest country by area and the seventh most populous. Its capital is Brasília, and its most populous city is São Paulo. The federation is composed of the union of the 26 states and the Federal District. It is the only country in the Americas to have Portuguese as an official language. Brazil is one of the most multicultural and ethnically diverse nations, due to over a century of mass immigration from around the world. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of 4,655 miles. It borders all other countries and territories in South America except Ecuador and Chile and covers roughly half of the continent's land area. The climate of Brazil comprises a wide range of weather conditions across a large area and varied topography, but most of the country is tropical. An equatorial climate characterizes much of northern Brazil. There is no real dry season, but there are some variations in the period of the year when most rain falls. Temperatures average 77 °F, with more significant temperature variation between night and day than between seasons. Tourism in Brazil is a growing sector and key to the economy of several regions of the country. Natural areas are its most popular tourism product, a combination of ecotourism with leisure and recreation, mainly sun and beach, and adventure travel, as well as cultural tourism. The best time to visit Brazil is between December and March for most travelers. Among the most popular destinations are the Amazon Rainforest, beaches and dunes in the Northeast Region, the Pantanal in the Center-West Region, beaches at Rio de Janeiro and Santa Catarina, and cultural tourism in Minas Gerais. The main destination states are São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, and Santa Catarina. The culinary offering in Brazil is something to be explored. Some typical dishes are feijoada, considered the country's national dish, and regional foods such as beiju, feijão tropeiro, vatapá, moqueca capixaba, polenta (from Italian cuisine) and acarajé (from African cuisine). Brazil has many activities to choose from. Some of those are a tour of the Christ the Redeemer, helicopter tours, paragliding, Tijuca Park Falls, Rainforest Jeep Tour, hiking, and zip lines. Brazil has many accommodations to choose from. Some of our partner recommendations are Residence Inn by Marriott Rio de Janeiro Barra da Tijuca, Grand Hyatt Rio De Janeiro, Hilton Copacabana Rio de Janeiro, Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort, and JW Marriott Hotel Rio de Janeiro. If a resort on land does not fit your expectations, try out one of our partner cruise lines, for a true Brazil experience.
