An Amazing View of Amalfi

Italy is a bucket list destination for many Americans. You can spend months, or even years, exploring this extraordinary country about the size of Florida and Georgia combined. The destinations and experiences are countless. 

The Amazing Amalfi Coast

The winding roads and spectacular scenery along the Amalfi Coast will inspire you—the dramatic coast winds around Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, and Salerno. The turquoise sea and picturesque towns have made the Amalfi Drive an unparalleled experience.

Positano is a coastal town with whitewashed houses, a steep cliff and a pebbled beach. The picture postcard city renowned for its winding stairs - known as the Thousand Steps – was used in scenes for the hit movie Under the Tuscan Sun. 

Amalfi is an equally stunning city. Amalfi Cathedral is unique for its two basilicas, a crypt and a cloister. The cathedral was first built in the 9th century and a bell tower was added in the 12th or 13th century. I recommend getting away from the main street (Via Lorenzo D’Amalfi) and exploring some side roads. You will find extraordinary panoramic views once you get away from the crowds.

Ravello is my favorite coastal town. Villa Rufolo is the cultural center of the city. A wealthy merchant first built it in the 13th century. Its popularity grew when the villa was written about by an early Italian Renaissance writer a century later. 

Ravello is also known as the City of Music. Composer Richard Wagner wrote part of his opera, Parsifal, in Ravello in 1880. 

Active travelers will want to hike the Path of the Gods. It’s a two-and-a-half-hour journey connecting Bomerano and Positano. Hikers will experience unparalleled views of the route carved out of the side of cliffs. 

Sensational Sorrento

Sorrento is often considered part of the Amalfi Coast but sits on the other side of the Bay of Naples. You will find more restaurants and shops in this city that is much larger than Amalfi, Positano and Ravello. It’s also an excellent base for day trips to Capri. 

Most tourists take day trips to Capri but I recommend staying several nights to enjoy the ultimate luxury travel experience. The Blue Grotto is a must-see for anyone visiting Capri. A tiny entrance to the sea cave means the grotto receives sunlight that’s passed underwater to create a unique and very intense blue-colored water. Other highlights include the gardens, relics, and art at Villa San Michele and a 12-minute chair lift to Monte Solaro for an unparalleled panoramic island view.  

Cuisine

Campania is renowned for its cuisine. Some of the most popular tastes surround the dozens of lemon varieties grown in the Sorrento area. These lemons provide a distinct flavor, peel thickness and aroma that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world. They’re often used in limoncello, a digestif liqueur sipped after a meal to aid digestion. 

Another popular crop in the region is the olive; it’s used to make the world-renowned extra virgin olive oil. Olive oil is more than a condiment in Campania; it’s an ingredient in meat, fish, salad, bread and desserts. Extra virgin olive oil is also used as a health remedy for something as serious as cardiovascular disease to everyday dry skin.
