It is bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. With a land area of just over 8,000 square miles, Belize is one of the smallest countries in Central America. Despite its small size, Belize is also one of the most diverse countries in the region with a population of about 350,000 people. The majority of Belizeans are of African descent, but there are also significant populations of Maya, Mestizo, Garifuna, and East Indian people. English is the official language of Belize, but Spanish and Creole are spoken as well Belize has a tropical climate with hot weather year-round. The dry season runs from November to May, while the wet season stretches from June to October. Hurricane season officially runs from June 1st to November 30th, but hurricanes are rare in Belize. Belize is best known for its lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and amazing coral reefs. The Barrier Reef Reserve System is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to hundreds of species of fish, turtles, and coral. Other popular tourist destinations include Ambergris Caye (the largest island in Belize), Cayo District (a remote jungle area), and Placencia (a laid-back beach town). 1. Xunantunich in the Cayo District: This impressive Maya ruin is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Belize. Located just a short drive from the capital city of Belmopan, Xunantunich is easy to reach and definitely worth a visit. The site is home to several well-preserved pyramids, temples, and other buildings, making it an excellent place to learn about Mayan culture and history. The Cayo District, in east Belize is also home to several ecological reserves and parks. It features pre-Columbian archeological sites and features El Castillo, a 39 meter or 127-foot-high pyramid. Also, Caracol is found in the district and at Xunantunich - the largest Mayan ruin in the country. One of the Mayan caves open for exploring is Actun Tunichil Muknal. 2. Actun Tunichil Muknal: This unique cave system is one of Belize’s most popular adventure activities. Located in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, Actun Tunichil Muknal features underground rivers, Mayan artifacts, and stunning stalactite formations. A guided tour is the only way to access the cave, so be sure to book in advance. 3. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary: This nature reserve is home to an incredible variety of plants and animals, including jaguars, pumas, ocelots, tapirs, and howler monkeys. Cockscomb Basin is also one of the best places in Belize to see birds – over 200 species have been recorded at the reserve! 4. Blue Hole Natural Monument: This fantastic attraction features a gigantic underwater sinkhole surrounded by coral in the shallow and glistening waters of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll. The principal feature of the site is the Great Blue Hole, which runs 300 meters or 1,000 feet across and has a depth of 120 meters or 400 feet.
