Most of his family are sailors, so it was natural for him to follow in the same steps. At the age of 18, Gunnar began his seagoing career on merchant marine vessels in International trades. Later on he joined the Norwegian navy. Gunnar left the Navy in 1979 to obtain formal training as a deck officer at the Norwegian Maritime Academy. In 1984 he received his Mariner Master's license and continued to work on cargo liners as a 1st officer. In 1985, Gunnar joined the cruise industry as a 1st.officer on the S/S Norway. NCL. Six years later he came to Royal Caribbean progressing through the ranks. In 1998 he was promoted to Staff Captain, sailing on the Sun Viking, Song of Norway, Nordic Prince, Sovereign of the Seas, Majesty of the Seas, Monarch of the Seas, Splendour of the Seas .Gunnar was promoted to captain on the Mariner of the Seas, Before joining the Empress of the Seas in 2006. as. Later on as a captain of the Navigator of the Seas and the Explorer of the Seas.
