South Shore Beach Trail- Bermuda

South Shore Beach Trail
South Shore Beach Trail

The South Shore Beach Trail in Bermuda promises adventure and stunning scenery, blending stunning coastal vistas, rugged terrain, hidden beaches and the refreshing embrace of the ocean. This trail that spans from Horseshoe Bay Beach to Warwick Long Bay Beach is only a little over one mile long, but is considered one of the most beautiful trails in the world.

You can make your way to the trail from the wooden stairway leading to Horseshoe Bay Beach from the bus stop or from any of the sandy pathways leading away from the beach.  We did this trail barefoot, but I would recommend shoes!  The trail begins gently, meandering along a wide sandy path.  You will come to a point where there is a much narrower trail leading off to the right from the main trail.  If you follow this more narrow trail, you will traverse through lush foliage and fragrant blooms, and discover several hidden beaches and stunning views from dramatic cliffs and rugged limestone formations that plunge into the azure waters below.

Each twist and turn of the trail offers breathtaking panoramas of secluded coves, where the waves crash against rocky outcrops, sending sprays of foam into the air. This narrower path, presents some challenges, with steep inclines, narrow passageways, sand dunes and rocky outcrops. Yet, with each ascent, you're rewarded with awe-inspiring vistas, a patchwork of sapphire and emerald hues that captivate the eye, and isolated beaches where we were the only people on the beach.

In many areas, the soft, powdery sand leads to tide pools teeming with marine life, colorful corals and darting fish that thrive in these pristine waters.  Jobson's Cove and Warwick Long Bay Beach are some of the best areas in Bermuda to snorkel.  At a small hidden beach between these two beaches, we were able to watch a very large (~3') parrotfish swimming back and forth in the surf along the shoreline.  At Warwick Long Bay Beach we found schools of large parrotfish while snorkeling around the rock formations about 50 yards from shore.  There were also some very cool caves to see if you swam around the rocks to the right.

To return to Horseshoe Bay Beach, we took the wider main trail.  This was a much easier path that crossed over a parking area at Jobson's cove and quickly put us back at Horseshoe Bay Beach.  We could not see any of the cliffs or hidden beaches we had visited on the narrow path from this larger main path, but we did encounter some native Bermudans, with a beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback, who told us about the island and gave us some fabulous recommendations for dinner.

We headed back to the bus stop, reluctantly bidding farewell to the South Shore Beach Trail. The echoes of crashing waves and beautiful views of the untamed beauty of Bermudan beaches lingering in our hearts. A hike along Bermuda's South Shore Beach Trail is a trip through one of nature's most exquisite areas that should not be missed.
