As a seasoned travel agent and and the Cruise Travel Specialist at The Good Life Travel Company, the prospect of embarking on my first river cruise aboard AmaWaterways' AmaKristina ship was both exhilarating and full of anticipation.  The allure of river cruising, with its intimate setting and the promise of discovering hidden gems along the way, had always intrigued me.  While I knew the experience would be different from ocean cruising, I did not full understand the extent.

Setting foot aboard the AmaKristina, I was greeted with an atmosphere of luxury and comfort.  The intimate size of the ship immediately struck me, fostering a sense of community among fellow travelers.  I was amazed at how the staff and fellow cruisers became like family so quickly - everyone knowing each other overnight.  It was my initiation into the world of river cruising, a mode of travel that promised a unique perspective of the destinations we would explore.  While the ship did not have the same size or level of offerings as the larger ocean ships I am accustomed to, everything seemed just right because river cruising is more about the destination than the ship itself.

Exploring Provence from Arles to Lyon: The meticulously crafted itinerary promised a voyage through the heart of Provence, from the charming streets of Arles to the cultural richness of Lyon.  Excitement filled the air as I envisioned the picturesque landscapes and cultural treasures that lay ahead.  This itinerary promised the best of France for this time of the year: quaint towns, vast vineyards, and immersive experiences, until the river itself became a roadblock.

Nature had its own plans for our cruise.  Unexpectedly high waters and strong currents led our ship to remain anchored in Arles throughout the whole cruise.  A potential setback turned into an opportunity for AmaWaterways to showcase their exceptional customer service.  Instead of feeling confined, we were seamlessly shuttled to various highlights, ensuring that we didn't miss a beat in our exploration.  Our Cruise Manager Helene was a rock star and worked hard to ensure our experience was still phenomenal by crafting a new and unique itinerary that offered winery visits, imersive tours, and the always popular Christmas markets.  The crew and leadership turned what could have been a disaster into a fun and memorable experience - "we'll always have Arles" became our motto.

Another first for me during this cruise were the popular Christmas Markets.  To be honest, before entering this industry I had never heard of these unique experiences, and yet I have learned what festive experiences these can be.   A delightful surprise awaited us in each town as we explored the Christmas Markets along the journey.  The festive atmosphere, adorned with twinkling lights and the scent of mulled wine, added an enchanting layer to our already magical journey.  While I may not have completed my Christmas shopping in these unique places, I likely put on a few pounds as I tasted and picked up some delicious souvenirs along the way.

In retrospect, my first river cruise experience surpassed all my expectations.  AmaWaterways' adept handling of challenges, combined with the seamless blend of cultural exploration, culinary delights, and festive celebrations, affirmed that river cruising is not just a mode of travel, it's a pathway to experiencing The Good Life.  This journey was a testament to the enriching and immersive nature of river cruising, offering a unique and intimate way to discover the world's most captivating destinations.  I will always remember the experiences and people I met on this river cruise and I look forward to many more in the future!
