ROCK-HEWN CHURCHES IN LALIBELA

In a mountainous region in northern Ethiopia in a town called Lalibela, you will find eleven (11) rock-hewn churches.  These medieval monolithic cave churches date back to the 12th and 13th centuries and are attributed to King Lalibela.  Lalibela is known for its Ethiopian Christianity, and today the churches continue to be used by the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian Church.  Lalibella is a place of religious pilgrimage and devotion

The eleven (11) churches are divided into two (2) groups and connected by subterranean passageways.  The church names are:

  • House of Amanuel
  • House of Gabriel Rafael
  • House of Medhani Alem
  • House of Ghiorgis (Church of St. George)
  • House of Golgotha Mikael
  • House of Mariam
  • House of Denagel
  • House of Maskal
  • House of Lehem
  • House of Abba Libanos
  • House of Qeddus Mercoreus

This extraordinary monumental complex is impressive and should be on everyone's Bucket List.  I found the churches and people fascinating.
