Rome Through the Eyes of a Teen Traveler
Hey! It’s Audrey Legg! I'm 15 years old, and my mom owns Castaway Destinations - a travel agency in Kansas City, MO. My family and I just got back from a 20 day trip to Italy! It was the best trip ever. We went to several different cities including, Rome, Sorrento, Venice, and Tuscany!
There are many things to do in each of those cities but Rome is the most packed with ancient Italian culture. We spent 3 days there and I am going to tell you the top 5 things you must do in Italy!
#1: Vatican City: My mom’s favorite part of the whole trip was the amazing tour we did of Vatican City! It is home of the biggest Catholic Church in the world and carries a large display of artifacts from long ago. We did a tour through LIV Tours who had the best tour guides around the Vatican. We were able to view countless Roman artifacts and step inside the Sistine Chapel; one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit. Michelangelo’s works of art must be seen when visiting Rome.
#2: The Roman Colosseum: A staple of Italy and Rome is the Colosseum. The Colosseum was once used for entertainment through gladiator battles in 105 BCE to 404 CE. This arena is huge and is amazing to step inside. Our tour guide Dario, made this day so special. Going under the Roman stage was truly crazy to believe that thousands of years ago people were in my same position.
#3: Gelato: The best gelato to find in all of Italy is in Rome. Everywhere we went for this sweet treat was amazing. You can find gelato everywhere. Our family favorites were pistachio and stracciatella, which makes you seem like a true Italian! Finding little spots to enjoy a cold cone or cup of gelato was the best way to end each day in Rome.
#4: Walking Food Tour: Italy is known for their pastas and pizzas and the best way to experience these were through a walking food tour around Rome. We visited the favorite food spots from a local. We started off in the Jewish Ghetto and then headed into the square where we enjoyed our first course of Anti-Pasta (cheese and meats). Then headed to Alice’s Pizza for the best pizza I had in Italy. Then we had three types of pasta next to the Pantheon. Last but not least, gelato! Where I enjoyed a cold cone of stracciatella! Our tour guide, Francesca made this the best part of our trip to Rome.
#5: Exploring Rome: has so much to offer, and sometimes you just have to find it! My family found plenty of great restaurants and gelato spots just by chance.
