Mother – Daughter Cruise

May 2022--Mom’s First Cruise!

I am lucky enough to see my Mom every week. We have a larger family and try to gather once a week for a family meal. Those times are great, filled with noise and laughter of siblings and children and the general chaos of have 12-16 people gather.  It dawned on me that I haven’t spent time alone with my Mom in years.  We decided to take a mother – daughter cruise on Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas for Mother’s Day in May of 2022.

This would be Mom’s first cruise!  We opted to drive from our homes in Ohio to Cape Liberty (Bayonne) in New Jersey.  I arrived at Mom’s house at 5:00 AM to pick her up on Sunday, the day of departure.  Luckily, we are both “morning people” and we had a pleasant, uneventful drive.  As we approached the Port and rounded the corner, Oasis came into view.  This was my first time seeing an Oasis class ship.  We marveled at the size!

Parking was mildly hectic, as it seemed they were running low on spaces. Despite that, our walk to the terminal was short. Mom is pretty mobile, but she did have a hip replacement less than a year prior. She was able to handle the walking just fine.  We did encounter substantial lines at the terminal, as there had been a reposition needed in port apparently, or they thought they were going to have to but then didn’t need to. So boarding times were behind a smidge.  We had done the required pre-check in and sailed right through when it was our turn.

Our room was ready upon arrival, so we stopped there to drop off our carry-on luggage and met our room Steward.  Then we were ready to grab a bite to eat and look around the ship. What a ship! Oasis is an absolute beauty.  The namesake of the Oasis class ships, she features 7 distinct neighborhoods.

The Boardwalk- I loved the Carousel horse art progression featured in the boardwalk, leading to the Carousel. Mom and I took a spin or two on the Carousel.

Central Park- One of my favorite places on the ship! The plant life is amazing. Home to several specialty restaurants, as well as the library! We went daily to get a Sudoku and it was great to check out a new book when we both finished the ones we brought.

Pool Deck – Multiple pools, kids splash zone, hot tubs, and soft-serve ice cream!

Royal Promenade- Shopping, strolling, customer service, and Starbucks.

Entertainment Place – The place to go for a variety of entertainment from musicians, comics, juggling, even a ventriloquist.

Youth Zone – Oasis is amazing for kids of all ages! Truly something to do for everyone.

Spa and Fitness Center – Excellent spacious gym for working off calories, a spa to relax and rejuvenate, and smoothies! I enjoyed the walking track on Deck 5 that goes all the way around the ship!

Entertainment- We were thrilled to see the Broadway musical, Cats! We also got to see ventriloquist Ron Lucas, a fantastic juggler, an ice dancing show featuring an amazing sand artist, and our favorite of the trip---Aqua 80’s in the Aqua Theater.  It was phenomenal! Amazing artists all around.

Excursions- Our itinerary included stops in Orlando, Perfect Day at Cococay, and Nassau.  We opted to stay onboard in Orlando and had a fantastic pool day.  Perfect Day at Cococay was a perfectly relaxing day for us, spend chilling in the water and relaxing.  The Enchantment of the Seas was also docked. There were plenty of lounge chairs, a great quick lunch and beverages nearby. It was a perfectly relaxing day, just as we’d hoped.  In Nassau, we did the Blue Lagoon Dolphin Swim. I’ve done 2 prior dolphin swims, but this was Mom’s first. We had a great time and loved every minute of it!

Food- We opted to eat in the Main Dining Room each evening, making reservations ahead of time with our My Time Dining on the app.  Excellent food and service! We split our breakfasts between the Windjammer, Main Dining, and continental room service.  And for lunch we ate at the Windjammer or Loco Fresh.  We were always satisfied and always full! Mom wished coffee was a little easier to get to at times, but that was the only improvement we could have asked for.

Overall, Oasis was a fantastic time.  I had been worried about the size and potential crowds onboard the ship, as my prior cruises were on much smaller vessels. There were 4,647 passengers onboard, and I never felt crowded. I can’t wait to get back on an Oasis class ship! It made me a believer in the larger ships, and I am so glad Mom and I had that time together…we truly got to experience some magical memories and quality time together that we both will cherish forever.
