Five Dishes to Try in Paris

Five Dishes to Try in Paris

Paris is the city of light, and it’s also France’s culinary capital. Food standards are high here; Parisians love their food! Even McDonald’s tastes better in Paris.Having said that, in such a bustling city, the most popular tourist destination in the world, it’s hard to get lost and miss out on the good stuff. That’s why I’ve put together five foods and dishes you just have to try when in Paris. With no particular order, here are my favorite luxury treats!

1. Bread and Pastries

Let’s start with an easy one, bakeries in Paris have a worldwide reputation.

They invented the baguette after all, but French bread is much more than that — just walk by a Parisian bakery and let the gorgeous scents coming out of the oven take you to your fondest memories and back. The buttery croissants, the pillowy brioche buns, they’re just hard to beat. Bread is more than a staple in Paris, though; confectioneries and cakes are nothing less than luxury items. Stop by at Des Gâteaux et du Pain or Chef Gilles Marchal’s Bakery to see bread treated as authentic jewelry.

2. Onion Soup

This might sound like a cliché, but it really isn’t. To think French cooks can make such a decadent treat with simple ingredients like beef broth, butter and onions is proof that they’ve really mastered the art of cooking.

You can’t visit Paris without trying a nice, steamy onion soup.If you’re not familiarized with this first course, think of tender caramelized onions floating in a rich broth, topped with a crouton and grated with cheese. At least that’s the most prominent version. You’ll be happy to know there are many variations for this comforting soup! For a mean bowl of onion soup, visit La Rotonde or the acclaimed Au Pied de Cochon in Paris.

3. Gourmet Treats

You might want to find a gourmet shop and restaurant featuring the most exclusive goods in Paris, like the Comptoir de la Gastronomie in Rue Montmartre.

Think duck confit, foie gras, truffles, caviar, smoked salmon, fine cheese and lovely terrines. The best of the best in the French food repertoire in a single place. Worthy of splurging a little, this Maison has been around since 1894, and it’s a beacon for sweet and savory Parisian delicatessen. If you’re a foodie, you can’t miss visiting Le Comptoir, and I promise you won’t leave empty-handed!

4. Coffee

If you think you know coffee, think again. People take our favorite dark brew seriously in Paris, and it’s hard not to find a pleasant café to enjoy a cup of premium coffee.Beware of tourist traps, though; not all Parisian coffee shops offer the authentic experience; you’ll want to visit a place where the people serving the coffee are as passionate about brewing it as you are about enjoying it. Some of the trendiest spots are Caféothèque, along the Siene River, Café Lomi up north, and Malongo, near Place Saint-Michel. This is coffee taken to luxurious, pleasurable heights!

5. Chocolate

Ending with a sweet note, Paris is well known for its fine chocolate.

Some of the most accomplished chocolatiers call the opulent city home, and their creations are more than sweet treats; they’re works of art. The finest cacao beans meet artisan hands to become more than chocolate, so expect to pay a premium for such delicious one-biters. Start your chocolate tour by visiting Debauve & Gallais, one of the oldest chocolate stores in Paris, but also visit more recent hot-shots like Jacques Genin. You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store!
