MEETING GRAY WHALES IN MEXICO

Gray Whale Interaction in Magdalena Bay, Mexico
Gray Whale Interaction in Magdalena Bay, Mexico

MAGDALENA BAY’S GRAY WHALES

In Mexico’s stunning Magdalena Bay, you can take a whale watching tour and if you are lucky, the gray whales will interact with  you.  Each year the gray whales will travel south from Alaska to spend their winter in Mexico to mate, give birth and raise their calves.  Peak season for whale watching in Magdalena Bay is January through March.  I recommend planning a two-day tour at a minimum, to fully enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime adventure experience.

When I traveled to Magdalena Bay for the first time, I was excited about seeing whales in their natural environment.  The idea of interacting with them seemed remote.  Considering that gray whales can grow to weight up to 35 tons and over 50 feet long, I was content with admiring them from afar.  To my surprise, once out on the water, the whales sought us out.  The mothers frequently came right up to the side of the boat and poked their heads out of the water, wanting to be touched.  It is true, animals are just as curious about us, as we are about them.  Their skin was soft, they were gentle, and they made no attempt to be aggressive in anyway.  Some mothers even encouraged their calves to interact with us. This was by far, one of the most authentic wildlife moments, I have had the opportunity to experienced.  I can’t wait to return for another magical gray whale experience in Magdalena Bay.
