Danube Christmas Market River Cruise - AMA

Nuremberg Christmas Markets
Nuremberg Christmas Markets

We began our Christmas Markets on the Danube cruise with AMA Waterways in Budapest. As we boarded the AmaStella we knew we were in for a treat as the ship was decorated for the holiday season. Our first night on board featured an illumination cruise along the Danube River providing spectacular views of the city with Buda on one side and Pest on the other.

As we sailed off along the Danube our first stop was the Imperial City of Vienna. With Christmas markets scattered throughout the city we spent a day and night exploring the many markets, including one at Schönbrunn Palace. From Hofburg Palace to St. Stephen's Cathedral a long day was not enough to see this beautiful city.

Our next stop was Melk, Austria. Home to the Melk Benedictine Abbey perched high on the hill above the river. After touring the Baroque Abbey we walked downhill through the small town of Melk and back to the AmaStella.

The charming German town of  Passau sits at the confluence of three rivers. We enjoyed wandering its quaint streets, visiting the small but pretty Christmas market and St. Stephen's Cathedral with the largest cathedral organ in the world.

Sailing further along we visited the German city of Regensburg. Walking right off the ship and into town makes this an easy city to explore on foot. The most beautiful and authentic medieval market is located here in the Thurn und Taxis Palace.

We ended our cruise with a visit to one of Germany's most famous markets, the Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt. They also host a Sister City market with local specialities. With its many churches and the fortress perched on the hill overlooking the city, Nuremberg is beautiful day and night.

Before flying home we took the train to visit Bamberg, a UNESCO World Heritage site best known for its Rauchbier or smoked beer. Also a walkable town, its easy to stroll along the river, visit the cathedral and try some of the local beer.

The AmaStella, accommodates 156 passengers with an attentive crew of 50. The modern decor of the staterooms, comfortable lounges and fine dining make it a nice home away from home as you cruise the Danube River.
