European Christmas Markets 2023

Christmas Market in Basel, Switzerland - 2023
Christmas Market in Basel, Switzerland - 2023

If you've yet to experience the spellbinding allure of European Christmas Markets, the time to prioritize it is NOW! As a self-proclaimed European History buff, and fervent explorer, I recently devoted three unforgettable weeks to immersing myself in the festive season in these cities. My trip was primarily by train but you can also do a luxurious River Cruise, Escorted Tour, or even a road trip to the top destinations! Save room in your suitcase for your collectible Gluhwein mugs as you find them along the way!

Lisbon, bathed in a golden glow during the holiday season, captivated me with its hills adorned with twinkling lights. Lisbon's Christmas magic extends beyond the markets, inviting you to experience the city's cultural and gastronomic treasures during this festive season. In the Alfama neighborhood, enhance your Lisbon experience with a Fado dinner show—an enchanting evening immersed in the heart of the city's musical traditions. No visit to Lisbon is complete without indulging in the home of the original and famous Portuguese tart at Pastéis de Belém. Take a stroll along the iconic streets, savoring the sweet layers of flaky pastry and custard, and embrace the rich history and flavors that have made this pastry a symbol of Portuguese culinary excellence.

Paris transforms into an elegant magazine cover along the Champs-Élysées. Christmas markets unveil French pastries, fine wines, and unique treasures. Galleries Lafayette cannot be missed as it is adorned with opulent decorations. The City of Lights radiates an exquisite festive glow in the beautiful neighborhoods with the sparkling Eiffel Tower making the perfect backdrop.

Strasbourg, Wow, just wow. It truly is the capital of Christmas. Adorned with half-timbered houses, it becomes a storybook Christmas village. An abundance of markets surprise at every turn, and the entire town transforms into a festive tale—a quintessential charm of the holiday season.Don't miss capturing the magic by taking picturesque selfies on the charming bridges over the river, immortalizing your journey through this enchanting winter wonderland.

Basel, the Christmas Market enchants with around 155 stands, each adorned with love, showcasing the city's artistic craftsmanship. Indulge in the culinary highlight—a "fondue dog," a warm baguette filled with Swiss cheese and a succulent hot dog, merging Swiss winter traditions into each savory bite. Explore stands like "Kulpa Weihnachtskugeln" in Barfüssergasse, featuring hand-painted Christmas baubles with iconic Basel subjects. Hans-Rudolf Liechti’s stall on Barfüsserplatz offers the tantalizing aroma of Feuerzangenbowle punch, prepared with rum and a sugarloaf in a copper pot. On Münsterplatz, "Änis-Paradies" welcomes you with 14th-century-inspired molds crafting delicious Christmas anise cookies.

Zurich's Christmas markets emanate traditional fun. While not a typical destination for the markets, this is a city that won't disappoint. Stroll along cobbled streets, savor Swiss chocolates, and witness a heartwarming spectacle—a Signing Christmas tree formed by children from English and German schools caroling in unison. For a can't-miss experience, head to the Lindt Home of Chocolate, a dreamy haven for chocolate lovers.

Innsbruck's Christmas markets, one of my favorites, are framed by the snow-capped Alps and create a winter fairytale. Enjoy carolers at the historic Golden Roof, stroll through alleys of fairytale giant characters, and make friends with the welcoming locals. For added sparkle, admire the Swarovski Crystal Christmas tree.

Munich, steeped in history, unveils the epitome of German Christmas traditions. The Marienplatz glows with festive lights, historic markets offer sizzling bratwurst and mulled wine (gluhwein). You may even catch a glimpse of the legendary Krampus. Between markets, visit the English Garden to watch surfers on the Isar River, admire the beauty of the Friedensengel, and complete your Munich experience with dinner at the original Hofbräuhaus—a celebration of Bavarian culture.

As your travel advisor, I'm excited to curate an inspiring Holiday escape for you to any of the iconic Christmas Market locations to begin making your own magical memories.
