When is the best time to cruise Alaska?

Deciding when you’re going to take your Alaska cruise might be as simple as looking for an open week on your busy calendar. But if you have more flexibility, you can consider other factors to decide when the best time will be for you.

Moving from least to most expensive, let’s explore each season’s advantages and disadvantages.

If you’re interested in saving money, and don’t mind the potential for cooler weather, shorter days, and the chance that some things may not yet be open or may be closed for the season then the early or late season might be for you. Cruising Alaska in April or October comes with some disadvantages, but you’ll be rewarded with lower cruise fare, less full ships (especially less kids and families), and your best chance to see the Northern Lights from the ship.

On the flip side, if you choose to travel during the prime seasons of June, July, or August, everything will be in full swing. All tours will be running, and restaurants and shops will all be open. You’re going to see tons of wildlife, beautiful views, and (hopefully) lots of sunshine! Do, however, be prepared to pay premium pricing, wait in long lines, and have very full tours (unless you book private). You’ll definitely need to pack your patience.

For reasons you can likely already tell, my favorite time of year to cruise Alaska are the shoulder season months of May and September. The crowds haven’t arrived yet, or have already mostly dissipated. Stores and restaurants are still open long hours. The sun is [still] staying out late, and most tours will be fully operational.

Ultimately, there’s no wrong time to cruise Alaska!! But if you’re flexible on your dates, I like to offer clients a few things to think about when making their decision. As always, I’m here to talk through your specific wants, needs, and priorities to make your Alaskan cruise perfect for you!
