Turks & Caicos Dolphin Encounter

Atabeyra - Turks & Caicos
Atabeyra - Turks & Caicos

At restaurants in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos, restaurants on the beach often have a sign that says "Ring the Bell if you see JoJo",the resident dolphin.

On a multi-generational family trip with twelve family members along we had an encounter with JoJo.  We had chartered the 69 foot sailboat Atabeyra, from Sun Charters for a day of snorkeling and sightseeing. It is a beautiful boat with a friendly crew and great provisions. We had snorkeled in the morning, seeing lots of colorful fish and a shark, and were spending the afternoon visiting some remote island beaches - beautiful!  The Captain spotted JoJo frolicking in the wake of a speedboat. We watched for awhile and we saw JoJo leave the wake and disappear. We were not far away and dropped our anchor. Sure enough here comes JoJo, all ten feet and 880 pounds of him, scratching his back on our anchor line. We jumped in the water with our snorkeling gear and swam with JoJo.  Within a few minutes we were joined by his mate and one year old named Dreamer. We continued to swim with them for about thirty minutes - they were very close - it was incredible!

Turks & Caicos was great, from our AirBnb luxury villa, The Big Chill, to great beaches and wonderful seafood restaurants but the highlight of the trip was certainly our encounter with JoJo and his family.

You can Google JoJo, Atabeyra and The Big Chill if you would like more information.
